We always like to do our best to welcome everyone to St Edmund's Church, including those who are less than able. However, provision of 'disabled access' into and around the church has been a painfully slow process, and only now is the end finally in sight!
Being a Grade One listed building, there are of course many practical difficulties in making structural changes, even if these were affordable. However, the greatest difficulty has been that of obtaining a 'faculty' from the church authorities, which is required to ensure that any changes are appropriate, and sensitive to the character of the building.
Progress so far includes the provision of a brand new 'accessible' lavatory in the Vestry; a ramp on the north side of the Crossing; and re-ordering of the entrance porch, including removal of steps and swing doors.
The final stage of this process will be the installation of a ramp from the entrance porch into the south side of the church. This is where the process has stalled, as it will be neccessry to either remove the pews from the south side of the church, or to build a ramp around the Font.
As might be imaged, there are a number of practical and legal hurdles to be overcome, so please keep in touch and see how this project is getting on!
